I’m dead beat right now.
There’s this programme in NTU where students currently studying Japanese (or have studied Japanese before) can bring Japanese students around when they visit Singapore. Today was my first time participating in the programme, and it was a pretty good experience.
The students had their itinerary planned beforehand, so we just had to bring them to the places that they wanted to visit. The students wanted to visit the cultural areas such as Chinatown, and unfortunately, I’m not very familiar with these places. Therefore, I’m glad that I decided to print out maps of Chinatown and Little India to bring along today, because they came in pretty useful. Maybe if I do this a few more times I’ll be able to get around without a map!
I’m pretty surprised that I didn’t have too much of a problem communicating with them, as it was one of my concerns before going for this. They seemed more comfortable with me speaking Japanese to them rather than them speaking English to me, even though I believe that I’ve learnt Japanese for a shorter time than they have learnt English. In any case, I’m really glad that they could understand my limited Japanese, and that I could understand most of what they were trying to say to me as well. Must improve on my Japanese!

We took プリクラ (purikura) before we headed back to the hotel. Purikura is what we call Neoprint over here, though seriously speaking, don’t you think that Neoprint sounds a bit tacky? Watching Japanese shows and reading some blogs came in useful, because I wouldn’t have known what they were trying to say when they asked if there was purikura here! I must say that the machines have really improved since the last time I used them (which was an extremely long time ago!). Saw this new machine which was huge, and allowed you to send the pictures to your handphone via infrared. I remember how, when I used to take pictures with my friends, we would randomly make our choices based on the pictures shown, because we had no idea what the Japanese words meant. Not that I understand everything now, but it’s a different experience going with people who know exactly what they’re doing. The pictures are a nice memento.
Hopefully they enjoyed their short stay here!
